TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball and men's cross country teams received the Sun Belt Conference Team GPA Award for their respective sports, the league office announced Friday.
The softball team, under the direction of head coach Beth Mullins, led the league's 10 softball playing institutions with a 3.56 GPA for the 2016-17 academic year. Troy was one of just two softball programs to have over a 3.50 GPA as a team.
Led by head coach Elliott Blount, the men's cross country team paced the Sun Belt with a 3.37 GPA as a team. Of the 10 programs in the league, Troy was one of just three with a 3.3 GPA or greater.
"Academics and graduation is goal number one for our student-athletes, coaches and staff," Troy Director of Athletics Jeremy McClain said. "We are extremely proud of our softball and men's cross country programs for being the torchbearer among their peers. Our student-athletes should be praised and celebrated for their tireless dedication in the classroom and on the field of competition."
Eleven of Troy's 15 programs finished the 2016-17 academic year with a 3.0 GPA or greater, and all of Troy's student-athletes combined for a 3.16 average GPA last year. The women's cross country and women's track & field teams posted the second-highest GPA among their peers, while the men's basketball team had the third-highest mark in the league among its peers.
