Troy Hall of Famer Freddie Thomas on College Football Hall of Fame Ballot

TROY, Alabama – Troy University Sports Hall of Fame member Freddie Thomas has been named to the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame Ballot, the National Football Foundation announced; the ballot features 75 players and six coaches.

From walk-on to two-time All-American, Freddie Thomas is a true success story in the history of Troy Athletics. Simply known as "Bootsy", Thomas earned Kodak All-America honors his junior season after recording 85 tackles, five interceptions, eight pass break ups and a blocked punt.

He parleyed his outstanding junior season into an even better senior campaign where he was named captain of the 1987 NCAA Division II National Championship squad. Thomas was a Consensus All-American that season as he finished with 85 tackles and an interception from his safety position. Thomas currently ranks 12th all-time in Troy history with 11 career interceptions, while checking in at 18th in total tackles and 20th in assisted tackles.Â

To be eligible for the ballot, players must have been named a first team All-American by a major/national selector as recognized and utilized by the NCAA for their consensus All-America teams; played their last year of intercollegiate football at least 10 years prior; played within the last 50 years and cannot be currently playing professional football.
The announcement of the 2018 class will be made Jan. 8, 2018, in Atlanta, Ga., conjointly with the College Football Playoff National Championship, which will be played later that day at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The announcement will be televised live, and exact viewing information will be available as the date draws closer.

Coming off the best turnaround in the country, an Associated Press Top 25 ranking, the first 10-win season in the school's FBS history and a Dollar General Bowl title, Troy will be among the favorites in the Sun Belt Conference and the Group of Five with 17 starters and 54 lettermen returning from the 2016 squad.

Troy set single-season records last season for both overall attendance and per-game attendance. The Trojans once again have six home games in The Vet including in-state matchups with Alabama State and South Alabama.
