TROY, Alabama – Troy senior wide receiver John Johnson was named to the Sun Belt Conference Leadership Team at the league's spring meeting in Point Clear, Alabama over the weekend.
Â
One student-athlete from each institution was selected for the Sun Belt Conference Leadership Team. The honor is given to those that exemplify the highest qualities of being a true student-athlete. Â
Â
A nominee for both the Wuerffel Trophy and Good Works Team last season, Johnson, a native of Troy, has not shied away from giving back to the community that raised him. The Charles Henderson High School graduate has spearheaded several community initiatives for the Troy football team including Read Across America, Habitat for Humanity and Troy's inaugural Bench Out for Breast Cancer.
Â
Additionally, Johnson is one of the football team's representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Troy won a Sun Belt Conference's monthly Community Service Award thanks in part to Johnson's leadership which led to the development of an open gym for area youth and a male empowerment program at Charles Henderson Middle School to focus on at risk youth males.
Â
On the field, Johnson caught 24 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns to help lead Troy to the best turnaround in the country. The Trojans posted 10 wins for the first time in the school's FBS history, won the Dollar General Bowl and became the first Sun Belt Conference school to earn a top 25 national ranking.
