TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's golf team opens play in its third consecutive NCAA Regional on Monday as play begins at The Grove for the NCAA College Grove Regional. Troy earned an at-large selection into postseason play for the second time in three years after finishing the season with a No. 63 national ranking.
The Trojans will be the No. 11 seed in the College Grove Regional where the top five teams and the top individual not on a qualifying team will move on to the NCAA Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Troy won the stroke play portion of the Sun Belt Conference Championship before falling to eventual champion Georgia State in the semifinals of match play. Troy defeated Georgia State to win the 2016 Sun Belt Championship.
The Grove is a familiar setting for the Trojans as they have played in the Intercollegiate at The Grove in each of the last three seasons, which included a second-place finish.
Head coach Matt Terry's team is led by a group of four seniors, three of which landed on the All-Sun Belt Team this season. Clayton Vannoy and Jared Bettcher earned first team honors, while Cam Norman was named to the third team.
Vannoy tied for first at the Sun Belt Championship and led the Trojans with six rounds in the 60s and a +0.50 score vs. par. The native of Pensacola, Fla., turned in six top-25 and four top-10 finishes in Troy's 10 events.
Bettcher, who was named to his third All-Sun Belt First Team in his career, was not far behind with a fifth-place finish at the Sun Belt Championship, just one shot behind a group of four that tied for first, and with a +0.77 score vs. par. The native of Auburn, Ala., had 29-of-30 rounds count towards the team card, five rounds in the 60s and tied with Vannoy for the team lead with 12 rounds under par.
Norman, a native of Greenville, Ala., tied for third on the squad with a 73.27 stroke average and +1.67 score vs. par and tied Bettcher for second with five rounds in the 60s. He led the Trojans with a sixth-place finish at the Tiger Invitational with a 6-under 210 as Troy finished second in the event.
The reminder of Terry's lineup is just as strong as senior Luke Moser is tied with Norman with a 73.72 stroke average on the year and is a two-time All-Sun Belt selection, including a first team honor last year. Sophomore Calum Masters turned in Troy's second-best performance in its Regional last year and has played eight of his final 10 rounds this season within a stroke of par, including two rounds of 3-under.
Troy opens play at 9:15 in Monday's first round and will be playing alongside TCU and East Tennessee State.
SEC Champion Vanderbilt is the top seed in the College Grove Regional followed by Texas Tech, Clemson, Georgia, Missouri, Lipscomb, Kennesaw State, Central Florida, Middle Tennessee, TCU, East Tennessee State and Harvard. Troy has victories over Georgia, Missouri, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee State this season.
