TROY, Alabama – The Troy football team had its first split practice of the spring as the Trojans opened on the grass practice fields behind Trojan Arena before wrapping the two-hour workout on the turf in Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The early portion of the day featured Troy's normal practice routine with work on ball security, special teams, individualized position work and team drills. However, the final periods in The Vet saw the first live scrimmage action the spring.
Troy's second scrimmage will take place on April 8 in conjunction with Alumni Weekend before the Trojans wrap spring ball with T-Day at noon on April 15.
Troy opens the 2017 season with a highly-anticipated matchup at Boise State on Sept. 2 before opening its six-game home slate the following week against Alabama State.
Quotable – Head Coach Neal Brown
"It was the first full contact work we've had this spring as we went about 20 plays with the ones and twos and our threes got some work. There are some things coming out of (today) that we have to improve on. I thought our energy was good and that's been the case through five practices, which means the culture of our program is continuing the build.
We got some first real looks at some key guys today. Offensively, Jamarius Henderson, Damian Willis and some of those offensive linemen who were either freshmen or redshirt freshmen last year got some work today and they are going to help us; we're going to have the opportunity to have more depth on the offensive line then we've had here in a long time.
Defensively, Adarius Wesley and Andre Flakes, both guys new to the secondary, got some work and I thought they showed and made some plays today. Those linebackers, it is going to be a spring hoping those guys keep improving. I think we have an opportunity to be as good as we were last year, slightly less experienced, but I like the length there – we just have to continue to get reps and get better.
On Friday Night Lights
"It's an event we are doing for the students. We are trying to do it at a time that works for them, and the weather is supposed to be nice. Our students have been tremendous and are one of the main reasons we set an attendance record last year. They are a major reason we hope to break that record again next year. We're pushing for a sell out in the Alabama State game, the first home game of 2017, and I think we'll get that and they will be a major reason behind that.
