First Day of Full Pads for Troy Football
3/23/2017 7:45:00 PM | Football
Â
TROY, Alabama – Head coach Neal Brown's Troy football team worked out for just over two hours on the grass practice fields behind Trojan Arena Thursday evening; the Trojans were in full pads for the first time this spring after going in shells (shoulder pads and helmets) on Tuesday.
Â
With the full pads came hitting during practice along with the usual suspects of ball security, special teams, team drills and circuit work. The Trojans are working towards next Friday's (March 31) first scrimmage of spring camp – Troy's annual Friday Night Lights. Due to the North End Zone Facility construction, the scrimmage has been bumped up to 4 p.m.
Â
Troy's second scrimmage will take place on April 8 in conjunction with Alumni Weekend before the Trojans wrap spring ball with T-Day at noon on April 15.
Â
Troy opens the 2017 season with a highly-anticipated matchup at Boise State on Sept. 2 before opening its six-game home slate the following week against Alabama State.

"It was the first day in full pads and by far the most spirited day we've had by far," head coach Neal Brown said. "We had a lot of give-and-take and a lot of growth offensively. Without (quarterback) Brandon (Silvers) out here, and we're not allowing (running back Jordan) Chunn to go through a lot of full contact drills, just because we know what he is and we're trying to get some of these young running backs some work. I though the offensive had some bright moments early in the day, and I thought the defense finished strong.
Â
"The things that were encouraging were some young guys making plays on defense – Kelvin Lucky made a huge play today, and I thought a couple of those young safeties made some plays today.
Â
"I think our energy levels have been good. At times it has been sloppy, like most people when you're four days in. We've inputted a lot of things, but I'll know more after this time next Friday when we have our first full scrimmage.
Â
"The assumption is we're going to have a good football team, but last year was last year. We went 10-3 last and kudos to those seniors, but that is done. We won the Dollar General Bowl, but that's done. We need to win championships. Our basketball teams just won conference championships and played in the Big Dance, and we've got to figure out a way to win a conference championship. We didn't get that goal accomplished last year, and we need to do that. That's what we're working towards every day."
