Seventh Inning Rally Lifts UAB Past Troy
3/21/2017 9:11:00 PM | Softball
TROY, Alabama – A strong seventh inning rally from UAB lifted the Blazers past Troy 3-2 under the lights at the Troy Softball Complex. Troy moves to 15-16 on the season, and remains 3-3 in conference play.
Â
The Trojans held the Blazers (11-17, 3-3 C-USA), scoreless through six innings, but timely hits from Analyse Petree, Rachel Dunsford and a two RBI double from Natalie Erwin gave the Blazers the 3-2 lead that Troy could not find an answer to in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Troy put one run up in the first inning after a single from Katie Webb scored Becca Hartley from third. Neither teams could get runners across the plate in the second and third innings, but Troy added to its lead as Brooke Echols hit an RBI single up the middle to score Carli Kayler.
Â
Kayler went 1-for-2 at the plate and scored one run to give the Trojans the 2-0 lead up until the final inning. Logan Calhoun also went 1-for-2 after a base hit up the middle in the sixth.
Â
In the circle, Rachel Rigney Brown got the start and threw 6.1 innings and was relieved by Peyton Glover after getting in a jam in the final inning. Glover closed out the game throwing two strikeouts and did not allow a run to cross the plate.
Â
QUOTABLE
"It was a pitchers dual," head coach Beth Mullins said. "They did a great job keeping us off balance. Rachel Rigney Brown did a great job for us. She threw a gem and deserved the win for that. We probably left her in there just one inning too long. I give UAB credit for coming back and being ready in that last inning."
Â
NOTEWORTHY
• Freshman Katie Webb extended her current hitting streak to seven games, a team and career high.
• Hartley leads the team in batting average (.351), home runs (10), and RBIs (26). She is tied for first in hits with Stephanie Snyder with 33.
• Hartley is also tied for eighth in the nation with her ten home runs on the season.
Â
UP NEXT
The Trojans will travel to Conway, S.C., to face the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers for a conference weekend series. Saturday's double header will is set for 12 and 2 p.m., and Sunday's finale will begin at 11 a.m. CT
