Georgia Southern Rallies Past Troy 8-3
Â
STATESBORO, Georgia – Troy (12-14, 1-2 SBC) wrapped up its conference opener series with an 8-3 loss against the Eagles of Georgia Southern. The game was capped by a six inning rally from the Eagles, who took a 2-1 series win over the Trojans.
Â
The game started slow for the Trojans as Georgia Southern doubled to right field in the first inning, scoring a run to take a 1-0 lead early in the game. Troy was not able to get anything on the board through five innings, and the Eagles capitalized with another run in the third.
Â
Down 2-0 in the top of the fifth, a lead off double from Katie Webb, followed by a single from Madeline Porter put two Troy runners on base with no outs. A Becca Hartley walk loaded the bases for Erica Davis who took a hit by pitch to bring in a run. With two outs, Jordan Gray came in to pinch hit and a walk scored another Trojan run to tie the game at 2-2.
Â
The Eagles put another double on the board, but the Trojan defense was able to hold Georgia Southern with no damage done in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back base hits, followed by a Carli Kayler double to right field scored a run from third to give Troy a 3-2 lead.
Â
The Trojans could not hold on to the lead for long as a six inning rally from the Eagles locked up the win and the series for Georgia Southern. A single and a double, along with a few Trojan errors allowed the Eagles to take a 6-3 lead over Troy. Claire Graves entered the circle for Troy and Georgia Southern's home run leader, Emily Snider, hit a two-run shot over the right field wall to seal the 8-3 win for the Eagles.
Peyton Glover got her sixth start and the circle and threw 4.1 innings before senior Rachel Rigney Brown entered. Brown got the loss and moves to 5-8 on the season. Claire Graves also made an appearance to close out the game.
