TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's golf team opens its spring season at the Gator Invitational hosted by Florida at the Mark Bostick Golf Course this weekend; teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday.
The Trojans enter the spring ranked just outside the top 100 nationally at No. 101, but Troy has a prime opportunity to shoot up the national rankings as the 13-team field features five top-50 teams and 11 top-100 teams.
Troy ended the fall with a fourth-place finish at the Idle Hour Collegiate Championship led once again by senior Fátima Fernández Cano, who tied for second. Cano posted a 72.50 stroke average in the fall and she ranks 23rd nationally with a 3.0 average on par three holes this season. She enters her final spring season with eight career victories and has finished in the top 10 in 54.3 percent of her career tournaments (19-of-35).
Two other seniors, Gabi Oubre' and Becca Horner, also begin their final spring seasons with the Trojans. Oubre' enters the spring with a 76.7 career stroke average at Troy, the third lowest in school history, while Horner's 76.00 fall stroke average is one-and-a-half strokes lower than her career average.
Head coach Bart Barnes will call on a pair of sophomores to round out his lineup. Bianca Lohbauer has posted a 76.2 stroke average so far in her career, which ranks second in school history behind Cano. Bria Jansen enters the spring with 14 career rounds under her belt for the Trojans.
Quotable
"We're excited to get back on the golf course," head coach Bart Barnes said. "It's been a little bit longer of a layoff than normal, but we were able to get in some really high quality events this spring which pushed our start date back slightly. I thought we ended the fall playing really well and that has carried over to our practice work here in the spring."
