Trojan Tidbits - Ta'Kierra Gibbs
2/7/2017 10:38:00 AM | Basketball (W)
Ta'Kierra Gibbs, known as KG, is a senior social science major from Eatonton, Georgia. KG is a member of the Troy women's basketball team where she plays guard. Before playing at Troy, KG attended and played at Central Georgia Technical College in Macon, Georgia. It was in Eatonton where Gibbs fell in love with the game of basketball.
"You don't see anything but trees," said Gibbs with a smile. "All I did was go to class and play basketball everyday. That was the reason I was so good because you didn't have anything else to do."
Gibbs spent hours of her childhood outside playing basketball. Her entire family plays basketball, and she attributes that to where she is in life.
"I've been playing probably since I was five or six years old," said Gibbs. "Ever since then, my love just grew for the game every day."
Gibbs, known to be a leader with her high energy and funny personality, tore her Achilles tendon last season. While this could have gotten her down, she had constant motivation to get back to the game she loves.
"My mom called and talked to me everyday," said Gibbs. "She told me God put me here for a reason, and your torn Achilles happened for a reason. We don't know the answer and you have to fight through it because at the end of the day you're going walk across that stage and get your diploma."
KG knows that everyone looks to her for energy and the team picks up that same spark of energy. She is always talking to the defense and letting them know what to do. KG knows that the more energy she has the better it is for the team.
"I feel like I bring energy to this team," said Gibbs. "Everyone, everyday looks for me to do something funny or have that type of energy. If I don't have that kind of energy, they would wonder what's wrong with KG."
Gibbs said that she also loves the game of basketball because of one of her favorite players, Kobe Bryant.
"For Kobe, he brought me closer when I tore my Achilles." said Gibbs. "I looked at it like this, the man tore his Achilles and is much older than me and I'm much younger I have the ability to come back and still be great."
The other reasons she likes Kobe is because of his game. Outside of Kobe and the Lakers, KG is a huge Golden State Warriors fan. She said other than Kobe that her favorite players are on the Warriors: Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant.
Gibbs has a dream that keeps her motivated to continue playing her hardest - playing basketball overseas. She is confident she will be able to accomplish this dream because she has accomplished so much in life thus far. One accomplishment is being able to attend and play at Troy University.
"I can say being able to come to Troy University and being the first from my family to graduate from a university," said Gibbs. "Also when we won the Sun Belt Championship last year."
After graduation, Ta'Kierra hopes to go back to her hometown and open a gym. She would also like to expand to other small communities, giving everyone an opportunity to play sports.
"My associates degree is in business management and my minor is recreation," said Gibbs. "So I want to go into the field to open my own business with recreation and have different sports in my gym so everyone can play. We don't really have that in my home town."
