BOCA RATON, Florida - Troy (1-0) got off to a great start this season as they defeated Bethune-Cookman 8-4 in their 2017 season opener at the FAU "Kick-Off" Classic.
After trailing the Wildcats 3-0 through the first three innings, the Trojans' bats started heating up. Senior Becca Hartley led things off with a solo home run over the right field wall in the top of the fourth inning. Hartley is the returning home run leader on the team as she blasted 11 last season to help Troy break the program home run record (62).
A big sixth inning put the game away for Troy as base hits by Stephanie Snyder, Taylor Corbett and Kaylee Hussey brought in four runs to give the Trojans a 5-3 lead. Junior Erica Davis hit her first career triple to bring in two more runs for Troy.
Hussey topped off the game with another base hit to score freshman Grace Mirly in the top of the seventh. Wildcats started making a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, but big defensive stops by the Trojans locked the game up.
Sophomore pitcher Claire Graves earned the start in the circle and pitched a complete game. She gave up nine hits, but delivered a clutch strikeout to end the game as the Wildcats had the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate.
TROY 2, UNF 5
Coming off a win against Bethune-Cookman, Troy took the field against UNF and ultimately fell 5-2.
Sophomore Peyton Glover started in the circle and pitched two innings with three hits and one strikeout before handing it off the senior Rachel Rigney Brown. Brown finished the game only allowing one hit and throwing two strikeouts.
The Ospreys got on the board first with an RBI double, but Troy quickly responded as sophomore Maddie Porter hit a base hit down the right side to score Erica Davis.
North Florida was able to capitalize on a few walks that loaded the bases and scored four runs before the Trojans were able to get out of the inning trailing 5-1.
Catcher Kaylee Hussey hit her second career triple and scored on a fielding error to put the Trojans within three in the bottom of the fourth. Both teams put up a strong defensive front and did not allow anymore runs in the game, as the Ospreys took home the win.
