Trojans Drop Road Match at Texas State
10/20/2017 9:45:00 PM | Soccer
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Julia Winter scored twice but it was not enough to overcome an early onslaught by Texas State in a 4-2 loss at the Bobcat Soccer Complex on Friday.
Â
Winter put the Trojans (6-9-2, 4-4 Sun Belt) ahead early. With just 5:48 off the clock, Claire Taylor played in a cross that caromed off the Texas State keeper where Winter struck it first-time off a bounce and into the net. The advantage was very short-lived as the Bobcats countered 11 seconds and four passes later. Texas State added two more goals over the next seven minutes to surge ahead 3-1.
Â
Troy and Winter created a couple of fantastic opportunities early in the second half, one when the sophomore's diving header narrowly missed left and another when Winter dribbled past a pair of defenders, but had her shot saved.
Â
The squad's leading scorer added her seventh of the season in the 66th minute when she headed in a cross from Kate Lorenz. After an initial cross was blocked, Lorenz collected the ball left of the box and put it near the penalty spot and Winter finished it near post.
Â
QUOTABLE
"Individual breakdowns cost us in a game against a very good opponent," head coach Ged O'Connor said. "Playing a tough team, we can't afford to make the mistake we did. Texas State is battling for a regular season title and we didn't do the things we needed to do to get a result."
Â
UP NEXT
Troy visit UL Lafayette on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Trojans are 3-2-1 all-time on the road versus the Ragin' Cajuns and have not lost at ULL since 2006.
Â
NOTEWORTHY
• Troy's seeding in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament remains unchanged with the result. The Trojans head to Sunday fifth in the league table with 12 points, one behind Coastal Carolina and one ahead of Little Rock.
Â
• Taylor's assist was her first of the season and second of her career. It was also the first assist of the year for Lorenz and third of her career.
