BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Trojans closed out their first weekend of dual match play for the 2017 season against ETSU. In a back and forth match, the Trojans fell to the Buccaneers 4-3 on a neutral court in Blacksburg, Va., and move to 0-2 on the season.
Last season, ETSU made history with their 20-3 record, the most wins in program history. They were Southern Conference Tournament champions and made an appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Bucs return a top-100 player in Ioanna Markesini.
In singles competition, the Trojans split the matches picking up three wins. Efriliya Herlina defeated Melissa Esguerra 6-2, 6-2. After dropping the first set, Luisa Ferrauti earned the win against Yi Chi Ma in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. Alicia Rodriguez ended singles play with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jayde Viccars.
"Luisa had an incredible comeback and won her match to get the 3-3 tie," head coach Rawia Elsisi said. "It all come down to the last point on court three in a two-and-a-half-hour match.
In doubles, Ferrauti and Hannah Seizer pulled out a big win against Viccars and Esguerra 6-3.
"The girls fought very hard today on each court until the last point," Elsisi said. "I am more than proud of the girls competing with a big heart against a tough Southern Conference champion team like ETSU. It hurts not clinching the double point early in the match that would have given us an early lead, because ewe knew it was going to be a battle on all six singles positions."
The team continues dual match play as they head to Rock Hill and Greenville, S.C., to face Winthrop and Furman Jan. 28-29.
