TROY, Alabama – Former Trojan, Grant Bennett, and current assistant coach, Brad Phillips, received Pitcher of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year honors, the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association announced on Friday.
Â
Grant Bennett, who played at Troy from 2015-16, was named All-Sun Belt Second Team as a junior and All-Sun Belt First team as a senior. Bennett pitched in 30 career games, logging 208.2 innings with a 17-6 record and a 2.72 ERA.
Â
The Hazel Green, Ala., native went 8-2 as a senior with a 2.29 ERA, which was the third best in the Sun Belt. His eight wins were second most in the Sun Belt Conference. He pitched one complete game, tallied 76 strikeouts and allowed just 19 walks.
Â
"I am extremely proud that Grant Bennett received this special recognition as the Pitcher of the Year from the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association," Mark Smartt said. "Grant gave our team a chance to win every Friday night and was one of the best competitors I have ever coached. He will be remembered for years to come in our program for his toughness, tenacity and determination and I believe this award is a fitting tribute to his overall ability."
Â
Brad Phillips enters his seventh season at Troy. He has handled the pitching duties in his time with the Trojans. Under his guidance two Troy pitchers have been named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year and a relief pitcher take home Freshman of the Year honors.
Â
In 2013, Phillips coached the Troy staff to fifth in the nation recording 8.6 strikeouts per games. This past season, the staff combined for 15 saves, which set a new school record.
Â
"Brad Phillips represents Troy baseball with tremendous integrity and does a great job with our pitching staff," Smartt said. "I appreciate the important role he has in our program and the loyalty he has for Troy University. Most importantly to me, Brad is an outstanding husband and father along with being a great mentor to our players. He rarely receives the credit he deserves so I am particularly excited that he was named the Assistant Coach of the Year by his coaching peers."
Â
The Alabama Baseball Coaches Association was founded in 1995, and strives to honor, educate and showcase the state's amateur baseball players and coaches. The association will host its 22nd Annual State Coaches Convention this weekend at the Birmingham Marriot Hotel.
