Late Goal Sinks Troy at Ole Miss
9/4/2016 9:57:00 PM | Soccer
OXFORD, Mississippi – The Troy soccer team was locked into a defensive stalemate until the 87th minute when Ole Miss' Gretchen Harknett scored to lift the Rebels to a 1-0 win on Sunday at the Rebels Soccer Stadium.
Â
Ole Miss (4-2) attempted 20 shots in the match, but just a handful were legitimate scoring opportunities as just seven shots were on target. The Rebels goal came after the Trojans failed to clear a corner. The ball landed at the feet of Harknett near the back post. She then eluded a defender and fired far post for the goal.
Â
Troy (4-3) put four shots on goal, but failed to find the back of the net for just the third time in the last 20 games. Abby Reynolds, Brooke McKee and Haley Roberson all tested the Ole Miss keeper, but their chances were saved.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Junior goalkeeper Mikki Lewis had six saves in the game, her highest total of the season.
Â
QUOTABLE
"I'm proud of our effort this game, we really did battle," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "Our youth showed this weekend giving up three goals on set pieces by leaving players unmarked in the box; you can't win games that way"
UP NEXT
Troy completes its four-game stretch away from home next week as the team travels to Mercer on Friday (6 p.m.) before taking on No. 1 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., on Sunday (3 p.m.).
Â
NOTEWORTHY
• It is the first time Troy has lost consecutive games since falling to LSU and Louisiana Tech to open the 2014 season.
Â
• Troy is now 0-2 all-time against Ole Miss.
