Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short, Troy Baseball Drops Series to ULM

TROY, Alabama – Troy pushed across two runs in the ninth inning, but left the bases loaded and fell to ULM 4-3 in the series deciding game on Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field.
Steven Whitaker led off the ninth inning for Troy (27-21, 12-12 Sun Belt) with a bunt single to the pitcher and advanced to second on a bunt by Shaw Pinnell. Brandon Lockridge moved Whitaker to third with a bunt, but beat out the throw to reach base safely at first.
The next batter, Matt Sanders, reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher and drove in Whitaker to cut the deficit to two runs, 4-2. Lockridge advanced to third on the play with a throwing error by the pitcher and scored on a Joey Denison sacrifice fly to left field.
A walk and another error loaded the bases with two outs for the Trojans, but a pop out to the pitcher ended the comeback for the Trojans a run short.
ULM (19-30, 9-15 Sun Belt) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as a run scored on a fielder's choice. In the third inning, Anthony Herrera singled up the middle and plated two that gave ULM a 3-1 lead before a bases loaded walk scored the final run of the game for the Warhawks.
Corey Childress made a relief appearance and pitched the final five innings for the Trojans and didn't allow a hit, only walked one and struck out six.
Offensively, Brandon Lockridge led the Trojans with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Peyton Fuller and Whitaker had the other multi-hit performances with two hits each. Whitaker had the only extra-base hit on the day with his first triple in a Troy uniform. Denison had one hit and drove in two.
The Trojans will play their final two mid-week contests of the season against SEC schools. Troy will travel to Auburn, Ala., on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest with Auburn before returning home to host No. 4 Mississippi State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
