AUBURN, Alabama – The Troy baseball team fell to Auburn, 7-2, on Tuesday night at Plainsman Park, but looks ahead to host No. 3 Mississippi State for its final mid-week contest on Wednesday.
Troy (27-22) fell behind early, but could only cut the Auburn (22-26) lead to one run and it came in the fifth inning. The Trojans were down 2-0, when Chase Smartt singled through the right side to make it a 2-1 game.
The Tigers answered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the fifth by Niko Buentello and extended their lead to 3-1.
The bottom of the seventh got started with an Anfernee Grier solo home run and three straight singles put the Tigers ahead 5-1. Following a fielder's choice, another one-run single made it 6-1. The final run of the inning, and the game, for Auburn was a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Trojans had three hits in the final two innings and scored one run in the ninth inning. Joey Denison drew a leadoff walk to begin the ninth. Following a fly out and a fielder's choice, Trevor Davis scored from second on a TJ Binder single through the left side. That was the final run of the game, as a line out to left field ended the game.
Gabe Klobosits (3-5) picked up the win for Auburn, pitching eight innings and only allowing one run to score.
Evan Hebert (3-3) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three. Robert Harris had his longest outing of the season pitching 3.1 innings and striking out two Tigers. Trey Johns pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on three hits.
Steven Whitaker and TJ Binder went 2-for-4 on the night. Binder had one of the RBIs, while Smartt had the other. For Whitaker, it was his second consecutive multi-hit game and the third of the season. Davis scored both of the Trojans runs and picked up one hit.
Troy welcomes the No. 3 Mississippi State Bulldogs to Riddle-Pace Field on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The first 1,000 fans will receive a FREE white Troy t-shirt.
The Bulldogs are the highest ranked team to play at Riddle-Pace Field since UL Lafayette played at Troy for a three-game series in 2014. The Ragin' Cajuns were ranked No. 2 at the time.
The Bulldogs will send junior right-hander Zac Houston to the mound on Wednesday. Houston enters with a 3-0 record and a 2.35 ERA, while the Trojans will start freshman Cory Gill.
