Bullpen Shines, Troy Baseball Falls Short Against No. 3 Mississippi State
5/11/2016 10:37:00 PM | Baseball
TROY, Alabama – In Troy's final mid-week game in the regular season, the bullpen threw 5.2 innings of shutout baseball, but Troy fell short in a 7-3 loss to No. 3 Mississippi State on Wednesday at Riddle-Pace Field.
"It's a disappointing loss," head coach Mark Smartt said. "We got off to a poor start, but I was really please with how hung in there. It could've gotten away from us pretty quick, but our bullpen did a great job to give us a chance. Unfortunately, we couldn't get enough offense to overcome the deficit."
Led by Marc Skinner, Troy's (27-23) bullpen combined for five strikeouts and only allowed three hits. Skinner had three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work. Trey Johns and Houston Mabray pitched an inning each and struck out one. Corey Childress closed out the game in the ninth and allowed one hit, but struck out one.
Mississippi State (34-14-1) scored four runs on four hits in the first inning and added two runs in the second to take an early 6-0 lead.
The Trojans battled back and scored one run as TJ Binder reached on a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Chase Smartt groundout to shortstop in the second inning.
The Bulldogs took a 7-1 lead in the fourth as Jake Mangum doubled to right field and scored Ryan Gridley.
Troy scored its second run of the game on a Trevor Davis groundout and cut the Bulldog lead to 7-2. Binder made it a 7-3 game as he singled up the middle and scored pinch runner Windham Jackson from second. Binder went 2-for-3 on the night with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Joey Denison was the other Trojan that had two hits in the game. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Cory Gill (3-3) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He pitched 3.1 innings and surrendered the seven runs, but struck out two.
The Trojans travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State for a weekend series starting Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
