Troy Cruises in Sun Belt Quarterfinal

NEW ORLEANS – The Troy women's tennis team cruised to a quarterfinal win in its first match at the 2016 Sun Belt Championships on Friday. Troy, the tournament's No. 5 seed, beat No. 4 seed Georgia Southern, 4-1, at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center.
Troy (12-8) avenged a regular-season loss to the Eagles and advanced to its second Sun Belt semifinal in three years under head coach Rawia Elsisi. The Trojans will now take on the tournament's No. 1 seed, No. 48 Georgia State, on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.
Against Georgia Southern (12-9), Troy cruised to a doubles point win, starting with a 6-1 win by Alicia Rodriguez and Nancy Karaky at No. 3 doubles. Efriliya Herlina and Sanae Ohta clinched the opening point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Georgia Southern was first on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. However, at the same time Troy was dominating the bottom of the lineup and grabbed wins at No. 5, No. 6 and No. 4, respectively, to take the match.
Herlina was the first to win, beating Francisca Norregaard at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2. Luisa Ferrauti then gave Troy a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mary Phillips Smith at No. 6. Nancy Karaky clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Emilia Bujan at No. 4. It was the 10th straight singles win for Karaky.
Troy's Sanae Ohta was a game away from winning when the match was halted as she was leading, 6-4, 5-2, at No. 2. At No. 3 singles, Hannah Seizer was in a third set when the match was decided.
Troy and Georgia State met just two weeks ago in Atlanta with the Panthers winning a tight, 4-3 decision. The Panthers beat ULM on Friday, 4-0, to advance to Saturday's semifinal.
