JONESBORO, Arkansas – The Troy baseball team fell to Arkansas State, 4-3, on Saturday night at Tomlinson Stadium.
Â
Troy (21-15, 7-7 Sun Belt) scored its last run in the sixth inning when Brandon Lockridge flied out to center field, but Chase Smartt scored on the play from third and gave Troy a 3-1 lead. Smartt drove in the other two runs in the fourth inning with a two-run single to right field as part of a career-high three hit night.
Â
Arkansas State (14-20, 5-12 Sun Belt) cut the lead to one run in the sixth as a run scored on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. The Red Wolves tied the game at three in the seventh. Arkansas State repeated itself and scored the game tying run same way it did just one inning before. The go-ahead run scored on a Garrett Rucker double down the right field line.
Â
The Trojans had a few chances in the late innings and got base runners in the seventh, eighth and ninth inning. Denison had a one out double, but would later be thrown out trying to score on an infield ground ball.
Â
Brody Binder reached with a pinch-hit one out single in the eighth and Cameron Sanders hit a leadoff single in the ninth. Those two runners wouldn't get into scoring position as pinch runner Steven Whitaker was thrown out trying to steal second and Sanders was caught up in a double play.
Â
Trey Johns suffered the loss (1-1) for the Trojans. He pitched 0.1 innings, but gave up two hits and was responsible for the game-tying and go-ahead runners. Starting pitcher Houston Mabray pitched six innings, gave up two runs on six hits, walked one and struck out one. Marc Skinner closed the game and pitched 1.2 innings, allowed two hits and struck out one.
Â
Coulton Lee picked up the win for the Red Wolves. He pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out three.
Â
Troy pounded out 10 hits and three of them came from Smartt, the first time he's had three hits in a game in a Troy uniform. Seven different Trojans had one hit each. Denison hit his team-high ninth double of the season, which was the only extra base hit for Troy.
Â
Troy looks to win the series on Championship Sunday as they face off against the Red Wolves in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN3.
