Troy Baseball Drops Sun Belt Opener to No. 16 UL Lafayette

TROY, Alabama – The Troy baseball team dropped its Sun Belt series opener to No. 16 UL Lafayette, 4-2, on Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field.

Peyton Fuller tied the game at two with one swing of the bat in the sixth inning. The senior blasted a ball over the fence in left field for his first home run of the season and the second of his career.

Brandon Lockridge singled up the middle with two outs in the sixth, when Fuller stepped in and delivered the two out shot for the Trojans (9-7).

UL Lafayette (9-5) scored the first run of the game on a dropped fly ball error with two outs and runners on first and second. An intentional walked loaded the bases and Steven Sensley put the Ragin' Cajuns up 2-0 with an RBI single before the inning ended on a strikeout.

The Ragin' Cajuns took the lead in the top of the ninth on an Ishmael Edwards double down the third base line that scored one. Edwards came around to score two pitches later on a Nick Thurman single up the middle making the score 4-2.

Corey Childress (1-1) suffered the loss and pitched 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. The Trojan starter Grant Bennett pitched 7.1 innings, struck out six, walked two and allowed two runs – both unearned – on five hits.

Lockridge picked up his fourth multi-hit game this season and was the only Trojan that had two hits on the night. The Pensacola, Fla., native extended his hitting streak to six games. TJ Binder had one hit in a 1-for-3 performance. It was the other extra base hit, a double to left center field with one out in the fifth inning.

The two teams will play game two of the series on Saturday at 3 p.m. Troy will send senior Lucas Brown to the mound while UL Lafayette will pitch sophomore Wyatt Marks.
