2/29/2016 7:19:00 PM | Golf (W)
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Fátima Fernández Cano jumped two spots into the individual lead after battling windy conditions Monday at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic. Cano fired a round of 72 on the Oak Point Course to lead Troy, who will enter the final round tied for eighth place overall.
Cano birdied two of her first six holes and eventually made the turn at 1-under par. After bogeys on No. 11 and No. 14 pushed her card into the black, Cano battled back with a birdie on the par-3 No. 15 to close the day at even par. She will carry a one-stroke lead over Elon's Heather Munro into Tuesday's final round.
Freshman Bianca Lohbauer turned in another solid round for the Trojans as she carded a 2-over 74 to sit in a tie for 23rd place in the field of 216 golfers. She had an eventful front nine with three birdies and three bogeys to make the turn at even par.
Troy will be one of 20 teams that will play the Osprey Point Course on Tuesday with a shot at the team title, while the rest of the 41-team field will play the Oak Point Course. Cano shot a 3-under 69 on Osprey Point in the opening round, while the Trojans posted the fifth-best team round on the course.
Coastal Carolina and College of Charleston are tied at the top of the team leaderboard at 13-over through two rounds. Troy sits 14 shots back of the leaders and just seven shots behind third-place Chattanooga.
Lindsey Harrison carded a round of 80 on Monday, while Gabi Oubre' fired an 80 and Becca Horner posted an 82.
Troy closes out play at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Trojans will be paired with East Tennessee State and Delaware.
