TROY, Alabama – Coming off a thrilling one-point victory on Saturday, the Troy men's basketball team travels to Mobile, Ala., for an in-state battle against South Alabama on Tuesday night. Tipoff is schedule for 7:05 p.m. in the Mitchell Center.
John Walton III hit a layup with 10 seconds remaining and Shawn Hopkins came up with a big block on the other end, as Troy knocked off Georgia State, 54-53, on Saturday. The Trojans rallied from a late four-point deficit to knock off the Panthers and pick up their second win in three games.
Walton led the Trojans (8-17, 3-11 Sun Belt) with 16 points and narrowly missed his second straight double-double as he finished with eight rebounds. Troy's lone senior is averaging 18.2 points and 9.4 rebounds over the last five games in addition to shooting 60 percent from the floor in those contests.
After being held scoreless in the first half against Georgia State, Wesley Person exploded for 14 points in the second half and extended his consecutive games with a 3-pointer streak out to 54 straight games.
Person continues to lead the Trojans in scoring on the year at 16.6 points per game, while Jordon Varnado is chipping in 13.6 per game. Walton and Jeremy Hollimon are both scoring at an 11.0 per-game clip.
However, the numbers over the past four games tell quite a different story. Walton leads Troy over that stretch with 18.3 points per game, while Person adds 16.3 and Shawn Hopkins is netting 10.0 per game; Hopkins was inserted into the starting lineup at the beginning of this stretch.
Troy held Georgia State to just 53 points in the victory on Saturday and Troy's 54 points were the fewest by a Trojan team in a victory since the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Tournament vs. Western Kentucky.
South Alabama (11-14, 6-8) has won two in a row and four of its last six heading into the final meeting between the two in-state rivals this season. The Jags knocked off Georgia Southern by four on Saturday after a one-point victory in overtime against Georgia State on Thursday.
Ken Williams leads the Jags with 14.8 points per game, while Georgi Boyanov adds 11.5 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game.
Troy led South Alabama by six at the half the first time the two teams met, but the Jags used a 21-6 run in the second half to jump in front en route to a 66-58 victory. Person led Troy with 15 points, while Jeremy Hollimon added 14. Boyanov led South Alabama as he finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
