Men's Hoops Rides Strong Defensive Performance to Road Win at South Alabama
2/16/2016 10:28:00 PM | Basketball (M)
Â
MOBILE, Alabama – Wesley Person scored 28 points and Troy held South Alabama to just 26 percent shooting from the floor, as the Trojans defeated their in-state rival, 61-54, Tuesday night at the Mitchell Center in Sun Belt Conference action.
Â
Troy (9-17, 4-11 Sun Belt) won for the third time in its last four games, including two straight on the road. The victory by the Trojans snapped a two-game South Alabama (11-15, 6-9) winning streak.
Â
"We put in a heck of an effort defensively against a really good offensive team," Troy head coach Phil Cunningham said. "It started from the minute they threw the ball up, we got after them. Any time you can go on the road and beat your big rival, it's a good night."
Â
Person hit 11-of-20 from the field, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range. He tied a season-high in points (28) and moved into seventh place on the Troy single-season Division I 3-pointers made list with 83; he is just 15 shy of tying Hunter Williams for the record. Person also extended his streak of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 55 straight games; the longest active streak in the country.
Â
John Walton III finished one point shy of his fifth double-double of the season as he chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds, while Jordon Varnado had eight points, five rebounds and three blocks.
Â
The Trojans raced out to a 13-5 lead over the first eight minutes as the Jaguars hit on just 3-of-23 to open the game. After South Alabama pulled to within three, 13-10, thanks to some help at the free throw line, Troy ended the half on an 8-0 run capped by an acrobatic tip-in by Varnado at the buzzer.
Â
Troy led 27-14 at the break after holding South Alabama to just 17.9 percent shooting in the half and just five made buckets. The Trojans held the Jags without a bucket over an 8:12 stretch in the half.
Â
Person caught fire early in the second half as he hit a pair of 3-pointers around two Walton free throws. Troy's lead quickly swelled to 19 and grew to as many as 21, 43-22, midway through the final half.
Â
South Alabama made the final score a lot closer then how the game played with nine garbage points at over the final 64 seconds. Ken Williams led South Alabama with 13 points, while Don MuepoKelly had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Â
Troy will take Thursday off before traveling up to Boone, N.C., for a Saturday afternoon tilt at Appalachian State. Tipoff between the Trojans and Mountaineers is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
