FOLEY, Alabama – The eighth-seeded Troy women's soccer team fell to No. 1 South Alabama, 1-0, in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Wednesday. The Trojans finish the season with a 7-10-3 record.
Â
South Alabama's Ashlynn Jones scored the game's only goal in the 80th minute when Troy's backline misplayed a pass. Jones intercepted the ball, streaked towards goal, beat the keeper one-on-one and passed it into the back of the net. The Trojans outshot USA 12-10 in the game but were unable to convert on their chances.
Â
The last 10 meetings between the schools have been decided by one goal.
Â
Kiersten Edlund paced the Trojans with three shots while Qarli Stone and Alison Watkins finished with two shots each.

"That was a disappointing way to end the season," head coach Jason Hamilton said.
"I thought we were the better team today. We had some good looks, but couldn't find the back of the net and then we made a mistake that gave them their goal. South is a very good team and good teams find ways to win even when they're not playing at their best.Â

Our team worked so hard over the past week to prepare and I am proud of them. The positive we will take away is that due to all the injuries we have we had seven freshmen and six sophomores play today. That is a very good sign for the future of our program.Â
Overall, this is been a very tough year for us. Injuries are a part of the game you can't control, but we also let multiple games get away from us when we were the significantly better team. We will learn from it and it will only make us better going forward."
