TROY, Alabama – For the 12th consecutive year, the Troy University baseball team will host the Ontario Blue Jays, a high-level, high school summer baseball program for an exhibition game on Sunday at noon at Riddle-Pace Field. Admission to the game is free.
Â
"Our team competes against each other throughout the fall so we look forward to playing a team with a different jersey," Mark Smartt said. "The Blue Jays organization is a first-class group of people and we appreciate them coming through Troy each year."
Â
THE OFFENSE
The Trojans will feature seven offensive returning starters from last season, with the leader among them being a Troy native in outfielder Joey Denison. A year ago, Denison had a team-high .322 batting average and led the club in doubles, home runs and runs batted in.
Â
The other returning starters include seniors T. J. Binder, Trevor Davis and Justin Friend, junior Matt Sanders and sophomores Brandon Lockridge and Chase Smartt. "The experience this group gained last year should prove valuable over the course of the 2017 season," Mark Smartt said. "I am confident this senior class will lead our team this spring."
Â
PITCHING
On the mound, Troy returns six quality pitchers led by upperclassmen Marc Skinner and Corey Childress. The two spent last season as late inning relief as Skinner pitched 36 innings and Skinner recorded 10 saves.
Â
Two pitchers return with weekend starting experience from 2016 including senior left-hander Evan Hebert and senior right-hander Houston Mabray. Cory Gill and Trey Johns also contributed heavily to the success of last year's squad.
Â
THE COMPETITION
The Ontario Blue Jays are a high-level summer baseball program from Ontario that competes in the Premier Baseball League of Ontario (PBLO). The Blue Jays play several other top college programs while on tour in the United States.
