Defense Shines on Final Practice Day Before Opening Scrimmage
8/7/2015 3:30:00 PM | Football
TROY, Alabama – The Troy defense flexed its muscles during Friday's 90-minute workout on the practice fields behind Trojan Arena. It was the Trojans final practice before the first scrimmage of fall camp, which will take place Saturday in Veterans Memorial Stadium beginning at 11 a.m.
Â
The primary focus of the day was the two-minute drill and plays inside the red zone, and the defense left its mark on head coach Neal Brown. Saturday's scrimmage will mark the end of a run of eight straight days on the practice fields for the Trojans.

Opening Statement…
We got in some good work. I'm excited for the defense. They bounced back after a rough day yesterday, offense had the upper hand, like so many times when you go through spring practice or fall preseason camp, the defense bounced back. I'm really pleased they overcame adversity. Offensively, we hit some good plays, and our defensive guys responded and they held us out of the end zone. We did a two-minute drill and they held us out of the end zone and then we did a red zone, and they were 4-for-4 making the offense kick. So I'm pleased with (the defense). Offensively, our outside receivers, the X and Z's, didn't block, didn't execute routes, didn't make any plays, didn't respond, and that was disappointing.
Â
On the scrimmage tomorrow and just two practices before school begins…
School starting is fine. We probably start school earlier than anyone in the country, and that's fine. We're going to keep grinding through camp, though. Our guys will pick up their classes and we're going to go to the 20-hour rule. We're going to keep working. We're working to get better, to get a toughness about us. Our mentality is not good enough. I could tell when I addressed the team this morning – we had some guys that were still asleep. Until we're able to answer the bell every single time, I tell them you either prove them right or prove them wrong. The defense proved them wrong, and the offense, especially those X and Z's, proved them right. So, I think any time we mix up the schedule, it tells us where we're at. I'm searching. I'm searching to find out where we're at as a football team, where we're at as a football program. We need to continue to see growth and the thing that I'm looking for more than anything is toughness. A mental toughness.
