TROY, Alabama – The Cape Cod Baseball League wrapped up its season last Wednesday and Troy junior pitcher Marc Skinner helped lead his team to the championship series.
Â
The Cape Cod League has been the premier amateur baseball league in the nation since 1885. Players from across the U.S. and representing all college divisions are recruited to play in the 10-team league. The league features 44 regular season games with a postseason made up of best-of-three quarterfinal, semifinal and championship series.
Â
Skinner, who played for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, helped lead his team to a 29-21-1 record and a first place finish in the West Division of the Cape Cod League. The Harbor Hawks were defeated by the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the championship series. Skinner made one appearance in the series finale and pitched 1.2 innings allowing three hits, one earned run but managed to fan three.
Â
The Phenix City, Ala., native appeared in 14 games, pitched 22.2 innings, only allowed seven runs-six earned-and struck out 16. Skinner finished the summer with a 2-2 record and a 2.38 ERA.
Â
"It's certainly a great opportunity when a player gets to compete in the Cape Cod League." Troy head coach Mark Smartt said. "The players in the past have returned from that with a great understanding of their ability and typically have made great improvements going forward".
Â
Skinner was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in 2014 ago as he finished the year with a 1.52 ERA, which was the fifth best in school history and the best in the Sun Belt. He finished fourth in the league with a .238 opposing batting average to go along with 70 strikeouts. Last season, Skinner made a team-high 24 appearances.
