Troy Softball Falls to Georgia State at Sun Belt Conference Tournament

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy softball team fell to Georgia State, 9-3, in an elimination game at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Bobcat Stadium.
Â
Troy (32-23, 14-10 Sun Belt) fell down a run early, but scratched back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Becca Hartley singled to left field to score Carli Kayler, who reached after being hit by pitch, to tie the game at one a piece. Hartley came around to score from second as Hannah Day doubled to right center to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.
Â
Georgia State (37-20, 16-10 Sun Belt) scored four runs off three Trojan errors in the top of the fourth inning. Kensey Caldwell singled to center field and tied the game at two. The Panthers took a 3-2 lead as Megan Litumbe scored on a fielder's choice. Two more runs crossed the plaet after Hartley dropped a fly ball that would have been the third out in the inning.
Â
"It's just an unfortunate game. We let two innings get away and I don't think we got off the mat quick enough and we didn't fight back quick enough, but they're a great team and they beat us." head coach Beth Mullins said. "We played bad defense, I thought our offense did a decent job, but pitching and defense are going to win you championships. We didn't do a great job of that. These girls fought all year and it's an unfortunate way to go out, but we'll be back next year."
Â
The Panthers scored four more in the fifth inning as Lauren Coleman knocked in a run with a singled down the left field line and made the score 6-2. The next batter up, Megan Litumbe, homered to right field that gave Georgia State an 8-2 advantage. The final Panther run scored on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Â
Heather Johnston led off the ninth inning with a solo shot to left field for her first home run of the season and the Trojans final run of the game that made the score 9-3.
Â
Jaycee Affeldt (17-11) suffered the loss for the Trojans as she pitched four innings and stuck out five Panthers. Ashley Rainey pitched three innings of relief work and only allowed two hits with one strikeout.
Â
Michelle Phelps went 2-for-2 with a double and Hartley, Rainey, Day, Johnston and Amanda Winters all had a hit for the Trojans.
