Troy Splits in Doubleheader with No. 22 South Alabama

TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball team split in Saturday's doubleheader with No. 22 South Alabama at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans won the first game, 6-3 but dropped a pitchers duel, 2-0, in game two.

With the win today, Troy (32-21, 14-8 Sun Belt) will receive a first round bye in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on May 6. Kate Benton and Carli Kayler were the only two Trojans to have at least one hit in each game.

The Trojans go for the series win over South Alabama (34-10, 15-4 Sun Belt) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Troy Softball Complex. Prior to first pitch there will be a senior recognition ceremony.

GAME ONE – Troy 6, South Alabama 3

Carli Kayler gave Troy the go-ahead run in the fourth inning as she blasted a ball over the left field wall for her third home run this season, a three-run shot that gave Troy a 4-3 lead. Later in the fourth Hannah Day drove in Kate Benton, who reached on a double to left field, to extend the lead, 5-3.

Jaycee Affeldt (17-9) picked up the win for the Trojans as she pitched a complete game and only allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out six. The six strikeouts propelled her into second place all-time in school history with 432 career strikeouts.

The Trojans fell behind early when South Alabama scored two runs in the second inning, one on an error and another on an infield single. Benton cut the lead in half in the third when she scored on a wild pitch.

Day, who now has 11 multi-RBI games, drove in her second run of the game in the sixth inning on a single to right field that scored Benton to give the Trojans a 6-3 lead.

Benton and Day were the only two Trojans to pick up at least two hits in the game as Benton went 2-for-3 with a double and Day went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

GAME TWO – South Alabama 2, Troy 0

Ashley Rainey (10-4) had only allowed one hit heading into the seventh inning, when Chloe Rathburn gave the Jaguars their second hit of the night, a double off the wall in left field to lead off the inning. A long ball by Kaitlyn Griffith, the next batter, gave South Alabama its third hit of the night and a 2-0 lead.

The Trojans broke up a no hitter in the bottom of the sixth with a single from Heather Johnston to lead off the inning. With one out and runners at first and second, Becca Hartley singled up the middle, but Carli Kayler got thrown out at home plate trying to score the go-ahead run. Day grounded out to the shortstop, leaving runners at second and third, for the third out of the inning.

The South Alabama starting pitcher, Kalen McGill (15-2), got the win for the Jaguars as she pitched a complete game shutout and only allowed four hits while striking out eight.

Rainey suffered the loss as she pitched seven innings and only allowed two earned runs on three hits in the game.
