4/3/2015 10:30:00 PM | Softball
TROY, Alabama – Late inning heroics led the Troy softball team past ULM in both games of  a doubleheader, 2-1 in the first game and 9-3, in the second, on Friday at the Troy Softball Complex.
Â
Jaycee Affeldt and Ashley Rainey had dominant performances in both games. Affeldt pitched a combined 16 innings on the night and only allowed four runs, two earned, on 10 hits as she only walked six and struck out 11 ULM batters. Rainey went 4-for-7 in both games with a double, triple, home run and three RBIs.
Â
Troy 2, ULM 1 (Game 1)
Â
Becca Hartley and Ashley Rainey hit two timely home runs in the first game of the doubleheader to give Troy a 2-1 victory.
Â
In the bottom of the ninth inning, with the game tied at one, Hartley smashed a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall that gave the Trojans (20-17, 5-5 Sun Belt) their fifth walk-off win of the season.
Â
Rainey sent the game to extra innings, as she tied the game at one with a no-doubt home run to left field. The home run gave Troy its first hit and run in the game.
Â
Jaycee Affeldt (10-6) received the win for Troy as she pitched a nine inning complete game and only gave up one run on four hits. Affeldt fanned eight batters and only allowed four hits.
Â
ULM (24-10, 8-3 Sun Belt) scored the first run of the game in the third inning as Rochelle Roberts reached base on a single and swiped two bases and scored on a throwing error by Hannah Day.
Â
Melanie Coyne (9-6) suffered the loss as she gave up two earned runs on three hits and struck out four in eight innings of work.
Â
Kate Benton was the only other Trojan to get a hit in the game.
Â
Troy 9, ULM 3
Â
Troy (21-17, 6-5 Sun Belt) had a seven run sixth inning to tie the game and take the lead, 9-3.
Â
Jaycee Affeldt started the sixth inning with a lead off single down the left field line and advanced to second after Amanda Winters reached on fielding error by the Warhawk third baseman. After two pinch runners and a pitching change, the two runners moved up a base via a sacrifice bunt by Carli Kayler. Erica Davis tied the game at three as she scored on a fielder's choice. Allison Moore scored the go-ahead run as Hannah Day reached base safely on a fielder's choice. Two runs came in to score, to give Troy a 6-3 advantage as Becca Hartley reached base safely due to a throwing error by the shortstop. Rainey knocked in Hartley with a triple to right field. Michelle Phelps added two more runs on the board as she tattooed a ball to left center field for her sixth home run of the season to give Troy a 9-3 lead.
Â
ULM (24-11, 8-4 Sun Belt) scored the first two runs in the top of the first inning, but Troy battled back and tied the game at two as they scored a run in the second inning on an Amanda Winters single and scored another run in the third on an RBI double by Rainey.
Â
The Warhawks regained the lead as Kaitlyn Dupuis scored on a groundout by Sidney Coy.
Â
Affeldt (11-6) pitched another complete game and only allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and struck out three in six innings of work.
Â
Only two Trojans, Rainey and Phelps, had a multi-hit game. Rainey was only a home run shy of the cycle as she went 3-for-4 in the game with two RBIs and Phelps went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs.
Â
Winters, Day, Kate Benton and Hartley each had an RBI in the game.
Â
Troy will go for the sweep against ULM at noon on Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex. There will also be an Easter egg hunt following the game.
