4/28/2015 10:58:00 AM | Basketball (W)
Saunders, a 5-foot-7 guard, comes to Troy after two seasons at Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tenn. While at Walters State, Saunders helped the Senators to a combined 64-5 record, two TCCAA Championships and two NJCAA National Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four last season.
"We are thrilled to welcome Arjae to the Trojan family," Rigby said. "When Arjae is on the basketball court, lots of good things happen. She has a vision for finding the best shot for either herself or her teammates on each offensive possession. She is also a fierce competitor on defense. Arjae will be an immediate contributor on both sides of the ball."
A native of Washington, D.C., Saunders is ranked ninth at her position and 51st overall by the Dan Olsen Girl's Basketball Report.
Saunders averaged 9.7 points, 5.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game last season as a sophomore, earning second team All-TCCAA honors. She ranked eighth in the nation in assists and had a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio while shooting 44.2 percent from the floor, 39.0 percent from deep and 80.6 percent from the free throw line.
She also averaged 2.6 steals per game as the Senators ranked four in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 48.0 points per game. She helped Walters State ranked 15th nationally in scoring offense at 80.6 points per game.
Saunders ended her Walters State career in the NJCAA Final Four as she helped the Senators to a 32-4 record and a No. 6 ranking in the final NJCAA Top 25 poll as a sophomore.
As a freshman in 2013-14, Saunders was a first team All-TCCAA selection as she averaged 8.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.1 assist and 2.0 steals per game. She helped the Senators to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament. Walters State ranked in the top 10 in the nation in scoring offense and scoring defense at 80.2 points and 49.2 points per game, respectively.
Saunders was a prep standout at H.D. Woodson Senior High School where she led her team to the 2013 DCIAA Championship and the 2013 DCSAA Championship.
