Troy Women’s Golf Heads to South Bend for NCAA Regional

TROY, Alabama – The back-to-back Sun Belt Conference champion Troy women's golf team will head to South Bend, Ind., and the Warren Golf Course for the NCAA South Bend Regional May 7-9.
"We had never been to a Regional before last year, we had never won a conference championship until last year, and to do it again really shows the direction this program is going and the support it receives," head coach Bart Barnes said.
Troy will be one of 18 teams to compete in the NCAA South Bend Regional and one of 72 teams in the NCAA Championship field. The top six teams from each of the four regional sites will play for the NCAA title at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
The Trojans claimed their second straight Sun Belt title with a 12-stroke victory over Texas State thanks to a trio of top-10 finishes from Langley Vannoy, Becca Horner and Fátima Fernández Cano. Cano earned first team All-Sun Belt honors, while Vannoy and Taylor McGraw were both named to the second team.
"Within about 30 minutes of winning the conference title, these young ladies were talking to me about what they had to do to take it to the next stage beyond Regionals," Barnes said. "Last year they got to see what it was like and see the level of golf that it takes to advance, and I think they are ready for it."
Troy, who is ranked 82nd nationally, enters the NCAA Regionals with a wave of momentum having won its final two tournaments of the year and three overall.
"I think that golf course really suits our games and what we are able to do – our strengths and weaknesses," Barnes said. "I think it is a great site for us and I really think it gives us our best chance to play well. The girls are familiar with the course set up and we'll be ready to play."
The rest of the NCAA South Bend Regional field includes Arizona, Duke, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, UC Davis, Pepperdine, Tulane, Notre Dame, Purdue, Kent State, Louisville, San Jose State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Harvard, Eastern Kentucky and Youngstown State.
About the Warren Golf Course
The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame was designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, arguably the greatest golf architects of the day. This classic links design features square tee boxes, undulating greens and thoughtfully trimmed native grasses. A public facility, Warren Golf Course rivals even the best private courses in the region.
Since its opening in 1999, the Warren Golf Course has hosted dozens of high profile USGA, NCAA and Western Golf Association tournaments, including the 2010 Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. The 250-acre venue is also a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
