TROY, Alabama – Big days from running backs Brandon Burks and Jordan Chunn and wide receiver Jarvis Bentley highlighted a high-energy T-Day Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The scrimmage officially closed out the first spring practice under head coach Neal Brown.
Â
"I thought it was a good atmosphere for a spring football game and we had a tremendous showing at Trojan Walk this morning," Brown said. "I really appreciate the pep band and the cheerleaders coming out. It was a relatively clean game, I don't think we turned the ball over and I think there were less than three penalties."
Â
The Cardinal team, which consisted of the No. 1 offense and No. 2 defense, won the game 24-7 thanks to a pair of touchdowns from Chunn and another from Burks. Blace Brown caught a 43-yard touchdown pass from Dallas Tidwell for White's lone points of the game.
Â
"We're a lot better then we were when we started on March 24, but we still have a long way to go," Brown said. "We need the guys that we signed in February to be ready to contribute. We got a good look at the guys who are on campus and got a good feel for what we have here."
Â
Cardinal jumped out to a 7-0 lead on an 8-yard touchdown run from Burks with 6:43 to play in the opening quarter. A 56-yard pass from Brandon Silvers to Bentley moved the ball down to the 12-yard line to set up the opening score of the game.
Â
White rebounded to tie the game at 7-all as it took advantage of a short field. Starting on the 50-yard line, Tidwell found Brown over the middle for the game-tying touchdown.
Â
However, Cardinal answered right back three minutes later as Chunn punched it in from 10-yards out in the final seconds of the first quarter. Chunn also had a 16-yard catch on the drive, while Teddy Ruben had a 12-yard catch and Burks added a 25-yard run.
Â
Following a 30-yard completion from Silvers to Dontreal Pruitt late in the second quarter, Ryan Kay gave Cardinal a 17-7 lead with a 47-yard field goal. Chunn capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run following a 31-yard pass from Silvers to Ruben late in the fourth quarter.
