TROY, Alabama – For the first time in school history, three Troy women's golfers have been named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Team; the league office announced the all-conference teams Monday evening. The opening round of the Sun Belt Championship was halted early as heavy rain and severe weather pounded the golf course. Troy golfers were still on the front nine when play was halted. Teams will attempt to finish the opening round and play the second round Tuesday, but more rain is forcasted for the area.
Fátima Fernández Cano was named to the first team, while Langley Vannoy and Taylor McGraw were both second team selections. The league will announce Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year on May 25.
Cano, a sophomore, led the Sun Belt with a 73.29 scoring average and with a 169 national ranking from Golfstat, the next closest league golfer is 72 spots behind Cano. A native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Cano won a pair of tournaments this year in addition to earning Sun Belt Golfer of the Month honors and Golfweek National Player of the Week honors.
Her second victory of the season came in Troy's final tournament of the year as she shot a 6-under 210 at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate. Cano's card set a Troy school record for lowest 54-hole total, a mark that she set two weeks earlier at the 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate.
McGraw finished second on the team and 10th in the Sun Belt with a 76.04 scoring average, however McGraw ranks seventh in the league in Golfstat's head-to-head ranking system. The senior from Macon, Ga., had four top 25 finishes and a pair of top 10 finishes in Troy's eight tournaments this season.
She finished sixth after shooting a 5-over 221 in Troy's victory at the Panther Intercollegiate and tied for 10th with a 14-over 230 in Troy's other win of the year, the Chris Bannister Golf Classic. McGraw was consistent throughout the season as 93.8 percent of her rounds counted towards the team score.
Vannoy carried a 76.42 stroke average into the Sun Belt Championships thanks to a strong fall. The senior from Pensacola, Fla., ranks 11th in the league in scoring average and in the head-to-head rankings. She finished the year with a trio of top 25 finishes and one in the top 10.
Vannoy's best performance of the year came in Troy's victory at the Chris Banister Golf Classic where she finished in second place following a 2-over 218. She followed with 16th and 18th place finishes and wrapped up the fall with a 75.25 stroke average.
