TROY, Alabama – Following a record-breaking month, Troy sophomore Fátima Fernández Cano has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Golfer of the Month, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Cano set school records for lowest round, lowest 36-hole score and lowest 54-hole score in addition to winning her second tournament of the season. If that was not enough, Cano also posted the second-best 18 and 54-hole totals in Troy history during the month.
The native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, finished the month with a 70.67 stroke average over her six rounds and played three of her rounds under par.
Cano opened the month with a fifth place finish at the 3M Jaguar Invitational against a field that featured three top 50 teams. Her first rewrite of the Troy record book came in the second round of the tournament as she shot a 6-under 65 to set the record for lowest round in school history. Coupled with her opening round 76, Cano's 141 36-hole total also established a school record, as did her 214 final 54-hole score.
The 54-hole score record didn't last long as Cano broke her own mark two weeks later at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate. The reigning Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, Cano finished with a 6-under 210 to reset the 54-hole score record as she claimed individual medalist honors. Additionally, Cano shot a 67 in the final round, which is the second-lowest round in Troy history, while her 143 over the opening 36 holes was the third-lowest score on the books.
Cano and the Trojans will look to defend their Sun Belt Conference titles April 13-15 at the Sun Belt Championships at the Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala.
