Troy Football Opens Spring Practice Tuesday

Â
TROY, Alabama – The Troy football team opens its first spring practice under head coach Neal Brown on Tuesday at 5 p.m. on the practice fields behind Trojan Arena and in Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Trojans will practice 13 times leading up to T-Day on April 25; all practices are open to the public.
Â
"There is going to be a lot of excitement from our staff and from our players," Brown said. "We had a really productive offseason, and I can't say enough about the job (strength & conditioning coach) Rafael Horton and his staff did in regards to strength and conditioning and nutrition for our players.
Â
"Now it's about getting on the field and going about our business," Brown said. "We want to practice with the mindset of getting better every day. We want to spend some time teaching our players how to prepare and how to practice – how we want them to practice. We have to create competition. With the schedule we play, we are going to have to compete in everything we do. Finally we have to identify our personnel. We have to identify what schemes are going to fit that personnel and where is our personnel best fit position wise."
Â
Troy returns 55 letterwinners and 16 starters from last year's team. However, every player will have an opportunity to make a first impression on their coaches as they fight for spots on the depth chart.
Â
"Everybody has an opportunity and everybody is starting fresh," Brown said. "We've been doing some strength and conditioning drills with the coaches involved. Our full-time coaches are really involved with our offseason program as far as being at workouts, so our coaches have an decent idea what the guys can do it shorts, but you never know until they put pads on. We don't really have a depth chart, but hopefully by the end of spring we will – it's going to be really fluid early on."
Â
There is no rhyme or reason to how coaches across the country treat their spring practice sessions. For Brown, it will be an opportunity to get a jumpstart on fall camp and the 2015 campaign.
Â
"Some people talk about spring practice as a totally separate deal," Brown said. "For me, spring practice is the first 15 practices of the 2015 season and that's how we're going to go about it. We want to implement our base packages, but we also want to start working on our opponents. I think it is important to teach our guys how we're going to prepare once we get into the season."
Â
Not only is spring practice open to the public, attendance by fans, alumni and the student body is encouraged.
Â
"At the end of the day this is their team and anytime we can perform in front of them that's what we want to do," Brown said. "We want people to come out and enjoy it, and our kids get excited when people are in the stands. We don't have anything to hide … our opponents have an understanding of what we do offensively and defensively."
