Troy Softball Drops Series Finale to No. 7 UL Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – The Troy softball team fell in the series finale, 12-2, against No. 7 UL Lafayette on Sunday at Lamson Park.

Troy (18-14, 4-5 Sun Belt) scored each of its runs on solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Ashley Rainey hit a no-doubter to center field with two outs in the top of the fourth inning for her second home run of the season and series. Amanda Winters took the first pitch of the fifth inning over the right field wall for the final run of the game to make the score, 12-2.

UL Lafayette (25-4, 10-2 Sun Belt) scored seven of its 12 runs in the first inning. Two lead off walks and a single loaded the bases for the Ragin' Cajuns with no outs. A walk and a single gave UL Lafayette a, 2-0, lead. A single from Leandra Maly and a sacrifice fly doubled the lead for the Cajuns. An RBI single through the right side extended the lead, 5-0. UL Lafayette scored the final two runs of the inning on a triple from Kellie Martinez.

The Ragin' Cajuns added two more runs in the third on a single and a sacrifice fly and added three more runs in the fourth inning.

Sara Mock (3-8) suffered the loss for Troy after getting the start in the circle for the second straight game. Mock gave up four runs on one hit and walked three. Rainey and Jaycee Affeldt both pitched two innings. Rainey gave up five earned runs on seven hits and struck out one. Affeldt gave up three runs, none earned, on two hits. Rainey and Affeldt only allowed one walk each.

Kate Benton was the only other batter to get a hit in the game for Troy, as she led off the game with an infield single.

Troy will travel to Kennesaw, Ga., for a mid-week doubleheader on Tuesday against Kennesaw State. First pitch is set to begin at 2 p.m. CT.
