Trojans Set for 2015 John Mitchell Alabama Relays

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – After two outstanding weekends, the Trojans are set to continue their 2015 outdoor season at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays this weekend in Tuscaloosa.

Troy will compete at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium, on Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21. The Trojans will face off against teams representing 67 schools, including conference rival South Alabama, in-state foes UAB and Samford, as well as Georgia Tech, Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Tennessee.

Freshman Sydney Wright was named the Sun Belt Athlete of the Week after her performance at the CCU Invitational last week Wright posted a 24.76-second time in the 200-meter dash, which earned her a first place finish. Wright is the first female Trojan to receive the conference honor since 2013. Wright also placed third in the 200-meter dash at the CCU Invitational, breaking her previous personal record in the event.

Wright will run in the women's 100-meter dash Invitational on Saturday at 3:50 p.m., as well as Saturday's 4x100 meter relay along with Paige McMillan, Alexus Cobbs and Cameia Alexander.Â

Corina Cox placed second in discus last week with a 47.42-meter throw. At the 2014 Alabama Relays, Cox placed second with a 49.99-meter heave in the discus throw, and eighth in shot put.

Cox and Jaevyn Wortham will compete in the women's discus throw, which is slated to kick off Saturday's events at 12 p.m. Wortham will also throw in the women's shot put at 7:15 p.m., Friday evening.

Distance runner Julia Ostendorf will run the 5,000-meter run on Friday along with teammates Mikayla Hodges and Sara Zylstra. Ostendorf and Hodges will join Dallas Worthy and Naomi Sheppard for the women's distance medley relay at 4:50 p.m. on Saturday.

For the men's team, Freshman Joevar James will continue his outstanding freshman campaign in the men's javelin throw, closing out Friday's events at 6:30 p.m. Last week, James placed sixth in men's javelin with a 57.84-meter throw.

Cameron Rice will run in the 400-meter dash on Friday. At the CCU Invitational, Rice earned a 10th place finish with a time of 49.6 seconds.

Other comepetitors for Troy's men are Isaac Jennings, who will compete in the triple jump on Friday and long jump on Saturday. Freshman Garrison Floyd will also compete in men's long jump as well as the 110-meter hurdles. Shakiel Parker will run in the men's 800-meter run, which is slated to begin at 4:25 p.m on Saturday.
