Trojans Go Cold Late in Quarterfinal Loss
3/11/2015 10:43:00 PM | Basketball (W)
NEW ORLEANS – The Troy women's basketball went cold down the stretch and loss to UL Lafayette, 66-52, in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Championships on Wednesday night at Lakefront Arena. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Trojans.
Troy (20-10), the tournament's No. 3 seed, scored a season-low 52 points and scored just five points in the final five minutes as the Cajuns pulled away. Troy shot just 31 percent (11-of-36) in the second half and struggled on the glass, getting outrebounded 26-18 in the closing frame.
Troy, hopeful for the second postseason berth in school history, now waits until Monday when the 64-team WNIT tournament field and 16-team WBI tournament field are announced. The two tournaments will make their selections following the NCAA Tournament selection show.
Ashley Beverly-Kelley led the Trojans with 17 points on Wednesday night on 8-of-25 shooting. Ronita Garrett saw her streak of consecutive double-doubles end at six as she scored six points with eight rebounds. The senior played just seven minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.
Troy trailed by two at the break but took a brief lead on a couple of occasions early in the second half. However, UL Lafayette (19-11) went ahead by as many as nine, 51-42, with 7:06 to go.
From there, Troy went into a man defense for the first time in its three games against the Cajuns this season. The change sparked the Trojans and a Kourtney Coleman 3-pointer cut the lead to four points, 51-47, with 5:01 to go.
However, from there, the Trojans shot just 2-of-8 with a couple of turnovers as the Cajuns milked the shot clock on every possession, scoring on three straight to take a 10-point lead, 57-47, with 1:48 to go.
From the there the Trojans began to foul and the Cajuns made 9-of-12 free throws to ice the game away. UL Lafayette, who advances to face Arkansas State in the tournament semifinals, was led by Keke Veal who scored 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
Three other Cajuns scored in double figures as UL Lafayette shot 43 percent (23-of-53) in the game. Troy, overall, shot 35 percent (23-of-66). The Trojans shot just 1-of-6 from the charity stripe and UL Lafayette made 18-of-28 from the line.
After outrebounding the Cajuns in the first half, Troy finished with a 43-36 deficit on the glass. Troy also committed 19 turnovers while forcing just 14 themselves.
News of any postseason berth will be posted to TroyTrojans.com and all of Troy's social media outlets on Monday night. Fans can find Troy on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat.
