TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball team battled, but lost a close 2-0 game, to No. 12 Auburn on Wednesday night at the Troy Softball Complex.
Â
Troy (13-12) had plenty of chances to score in the game, but left eight runners on base. The biggest threat for the Trojans came in the fourth inning, when Chelsea Eytel, who reached on a base hit, was thrown out at home as she tried to score from second base.
Â
Michelle Phelps led off the third inning with a double down the left field line and Amanda Winters drew a walk to put runners at first and second with no outs. Following a strikeout, Khadija Neely popped into a double play to end the scoring threat.
Â
Sara Mock (1-6) got the start in the circle, but was tagged with the loss as she pitched four innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits and struck out five. Mock had two clutch strikeouts in the fourth inning to get out of a bases loaded jam.
Â
Jaycee Affeldt made her 19th relief appearance as she only gave up two hits in three inning of work.
Â
Eytel doubled her amount of hits for the season, as she went 2-for-3 on the night, with a double and a single. Phelps also had a double that was her sole hit of the night.
Â
Auburn (26-2) scored its two runs in the top of the first on a Haley Fagan double to left center field.
Â
The Trojans will face Appalachian State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the first Sun Belt conference series at home this season.
