2/12/2015 10:27:00 PM | Basketball (M)
TROY, Alabama – Despite all five starters scoring in double figures, the Troy men's basketball team fell to in-state rival South Alabama, 71-67, at Trojan Arena on Thursday night.
Kevin Thomas earned his ninth double-double of the season, the 13th of his career, as he tallied 11 points while reeling in a game-high 13 rebounds, six on the offensive end of the court. Meanwhile, John Walton III earned his third career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kelton Ford poured in a game-high 17 points, in large part thanks to his 3-of-5 showing from long range.
Wesley Person added 14 points for the Trojans, the freshman's 20th game in double-figures. Musa Abdul-Aleem chipped in 11 points for Troy.
Troy (9-14, 4-10) fought tooth and nail to take a 49-46 lead with 10 minutes to go. An 8-0 run, capped by a 3-point play by Thomas, gave Troy the lead, but the Trojans were unable to complete the comeback as South Alabama went on a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead.
The Trojans trailed by eight points at 64-56 with 1:36 to go in the game, but Troy refused to go down without a fight as Person scored a quick four points to cut the Jags' lead to 64-60 with just 1:17 to play.
South Alabama (8-17, 6-8) found a way to respond as it extended its lead over the Trojans as it put the game out of reach, 68-62, on a dunk by Georgi Boyanov with 32 seconds to play.
The Trojans continued to show their fight as they cut the lead to four with 19 seconds to go on a free throw by Thomas, but again, the Jaguars responded with a layup of their own. Person made a 3-pointer with three seconds to go, but it wasn't enough as Troy fell to South Alabama, 71-67.
Heading into the break, Troy trailed South Alabama, 36-34. The Trojans out shot the Jaguars from long range as they made 6-of-10 3-pointers, to South Alabama's 4-of-11 (36.4 percent). On South Alabama's six turnovers, Troy made 11 points to outscore the Jags, 11-0 in points off turnovers in the opening half.
To open the game, the Jaguars took a quick lead, but the Trojans responded with a 7-0 run over 1:49 to take a 7-2 lead. USA was relentless as it fought to tie the game at nine. Back and fourth play ensued for the remainder of the half, as neither team led by more than five.
South Alabama was led by Taishaun Johnson who paced the Jaguars with 17 points. Boyanov made crucial buckets down the stretch as he ended the game with 15. Dionte Ferguson and Ken Williams chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively. On the glass, Boyanov grabbed a team-high 10 boards.

Free throw shooting down the stretch plagued the Trojans as they ended the night shooting 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
