Â
Troy (4-3) hits the hardwood following a pair of wins over Conference USA opponents, North Texas and Southern Miss. In its last time out, Troy defeated Southern Miss, 69-59, on Tuesday night.
Â
In that game, Jordon Varnado paced Troy with his fourth career double-double. Varnado poured in a game-high 17 points, and reeled in a game-high 13 rebounds, while Jeremy Hollimon shot 4-of-9 from downtown, good for 14 points. Wesley Person added 12 points, while John Walton III reeled in 11 rebounds.
Â
Person leads the Trojans with 18.0 points per game. He currently has the longest active streak in the nation of games with a 3-pointer (36). He also leads the conference with 3.1 treys per contest.
Â
Varnado has recorded the second-most double-doubles by a freshman this season, behind just Ben Simmons of LSU, the nation's No. 1 recruit last season. Varnado is the only freshman in the Sun Belt to rank in the top-10 in points and rebounds, joining Preseason Player of the Year Shawn Long of UL Lafayette, Preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team nominee Majok Deng of ULM, and UT Arlington's Kevin Hervey.
Â
Austin Peay (3-5) comes to Troy in the midst of a five-game road streak, which it started off with a 61-48 loss at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Wednesday.
Â
Chris Horton, who averages double-double numbers with 15.3 points and 13.0 rebounds per contest, leads the Governors. He currently has totaled the most rebounds in the nation this season, with 104. The Trojans will have to keep him off the glass, as he ranks third in offensive rebounds per game and 12th in defensive rebounds per contest.
Â
Austin Peay leads the series 2-0, including a 73-70 win in Clarksville, Tenn., last season. In that game, Kelton Ford sparked the Trojans' offense as he came off the bench to pour in a team-high 15 points.
Â
Troy hits the road for its final three games of its nonconference slate, as it heads to Seton Hall next week. The Trojans return home for their Sun Belt opener on December 30.
