Troy Soars to 69-59 Victory over Southern Miss

TROY, Alabama – A 13-0 run to start the game was all the Troy men's basketball team needed as it took down its second-straight Conference USA opponent, Southern Miss, 69-59 at Trojan Arena on Tuesday night for the first Trojan win over the Golden Eagles in program history.

Jordon Varnado paced Troy (4-3) with his fourth career double-double. Varnado poured in a game-high 17 points, and reeled in a game-high 13 rebounds, while Jeremy Hollimon, who shot 4-of-9 from downtown, scored 14 points. Wesley Person, the team's leading scorer, added 12 for Troy. Meanwhile on the glass, John Walton III reeled in 11 boards.

Southern Miss (0-5) was able to make it a four-point game, 31-27, coming out of a break, in thanks to an 11-3 run that started late in the first half. However, the Trojans were relentless as they responded with a 20-3 run of their own, to claim a 51-30 lead with 13:09 to play, which the Golden Eagles could never recover from.

The Golden Eagles gave the Trojans a scare as they ended the game on a 15-3 run, but time was on the Trojans' side.

Within the first four minutes of the game, Troy jumped out to a 13-0 lead, as it hit its first five shots, allowing every starter to sink a bucket. Southern Miss responded with its own 12-6 run, but the Trojans capitalized on their hot shooting to claim a 28-13 lead after a 12-1 run of their own.

The Golden Eagles' 21 first half points were the least points scored in a first half since Troy held ULM to 21 in the 2013-14 season.

In the game, Troy shot 13-fo-38 (34.2 percent) from beyond the arc, the most trey's they've hit all season. The Trojans finished the night shooting 39 percent (23-of-59) overall.

Southern Miss was led by Kourtlin Jackson, who tallied 15 points. Keljin Blevins earned a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while Quinton Cambell also finished with double-figures, adding 12 points.
