Troy Sweeps Little Rock on Senior Day
11/8/2015 2:48:00 PM | Volleyball
TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team started the day by honoring four seniors and finished with a sweep of Little Rock, 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-23), on Sunday at Trojan Arena.
Â
Troy (14-16, 7-8) snapped a five-match losing streak and did so thanks to big performances from its seniors. Blair Winston led the Trojans with 13 kills and had just three errors for a .370 attack percentage. Darby Griff was just behind with nine kills and hit .389 with just two errors. The third available senior, Ali Dowdall, led all players with 19 digs. The Trojans also honored Madeleine Bouillion, who is injured, before the match.
Â
The win made Troy 11-4 at home this season, breaking the single-season record for home wins in the program's Division I era. It was also Troy's first win over Little Rock (12-13, 8-7) since 2012 and pulled Troy within one game of Little Rock in the Sun Belt standings.
Â
"We played well for the seniors, and they played really well too," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "We knew today would be a good measuring point for where we are. Little Rock is a good team and the reigning Sun Belt Champion. We have never really matched up well against them, but we put a gameplan together that the girls followed really well and I couldn't be more happy to send our seniors out with a win like that."
Â
Both teams hit over .200 in a well-played match that was close throughout. Sara Landis led the Trojans with a .438 attack percentage with eight kills and one error on 16 attempts.
Â
Troy pulled out some heroics late in the first set, fighting off three set points after trailing 24-21. Troy ended up scoring five straight points and won the first set, 26-24.
Â
Troy built a 17-10 lead in the second set, but Little Rock fought back and took a 21-20 lead. However, from there, Troy scored five of the next six points and won the second set, 25-22.
Â
The third set saw 13 ties, but the latest was at 14-14 as Troy held Little Rock to a match-low .129 attack percentage. With the score tied, 14-14, Troy went on a run that ended with Troy leading 22-16. From there, Troy went on to win the clinching set, 25-23.
Â
Troy now turns its attention to the final regular season match on Friday at Georgia Southern. Troy will then travel back to Statesboro, Ga., where the Sun Belt Championships begin the following Friday.
