ATLANTA – Nick Arbuckle threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead Georgia State past Troy, 31-21, in Sun Belt Conference play on Friday in the Georgia Dome.
Arbuckle completed 29-of-41 attempts with tight end Keith Rucker on the receiving end of 10 of those completions for 154 yards. The victory was the third straight for Georgia State (5-6, 4-3 Sun Belt).
The Trojans (3-8, 2-5) scored 14 unanswered at the end of the game to put a little pressure on the Panthers and had an opportunity for more after recovering an on-side kick. However, Troy was called for an illegal blocking penalty and was forced to re-kick and Georgia State recovered.
Troy was whistled for a season-high 12 penalties for 117 yards in the game. Troy's previous high was eight for 73 yards and the Trojans had the 17th best turnaround in the country in penalties per game entering Friday's contest.
Georgia State carried a 17-7 lead into the half despite numerous chances for Troy in the opening 30 minutes.
Demarcus Kirk fumbled on Georgia State's third play of the game and Jalen Harris recovered for Troy on the GSU 30-yard line. A holding call derailed the drive and Jed Solomon missed a 50-yard field goal attempt.
On the ensuing possession, Arbuckle capped an 8-play drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Penny Hart on third-and-8.
The Panthers intercepted Brandon Silvers deep in their own territory, but the Trojan defense held on three plays. Demetrius Cain got a piece of the Wil Lutz punt, which gave the Trojans the ball on the GSU 15-yard line. However, Troy picked up just five yards and Solomon missed a 27-yard field goal.
Montres Kitchens kept it a one-score game as he stripped Taz Bateman at the goal line on Georgia State's following drive and Terris Lewis fell on the loose ball in the end zone.
Eight plays later, Silvers found Teddy Ruben over the middle for a 58-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:52 to play in the half. It was the longest catch of Ruben's career and the second-longest touchdown pass in Silvers' career.
Silvers finished 20-of-45 for 284 yards and a pair of scores. Running back Brandon Burks led the Trojans with five catches for 90 yards, while rushing for 54 yards on 16 carries. Ruben finished with four catches for 91 yards and Jarvis Bentley had a pair of catches for 25 yards and a score.
Glenn Smith answered right back for the Panthers with a 39-yard touchdown run two minutes later and Lutz booted a 30-yard field goal as the first half clock expired.
The Panthers' lead swelled to 31-7 in the third quarter after a 46-yard touchdown pass from Arbuckle to Robert Davis and a 1-yard touchdown run by Arbuckle.
Burks capped a 9-play Troy drive in the final minutes of the third quarter with his 12th rushing touchdown of his career – a 1-yard plunge – to close the gap to 31-14. Silvers found Bentley from 17-yards out with 5:41 to play in the game to set the final score.
Troy's Tyler Roberts finished with seven tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss; he now has 38.5 tackles for loss in his career, which ties him with Osi Umenyiora for second all-time in Troy history. Kitchens finished with a game and season high 14 tackles.
Troy wraps up its first season under Brown next Saturday at UL Lafayette. Kickoff between the Trojans and Ragin Cajuns is schedule for 4 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
