Seniors Pace Troy in Blowout of UL Lafayette in Season Finale

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – Troy couldn't have scripted its final game of the season any better in a 41-17 blowout of UL Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at Cajun Field.
Senior running back Brandon Burks topped the 1,000-yard mark on the season as he rushed for 118 yards on 25 carries, while senior wide receiver Teddy Ruben caught eight passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns and senior bandit Tyler Roberts had six tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and a sack on the final play of his career – Roberts finished the season with at least 1.5 tackles for loss in seven games, besting former Trojan DeMarcus Ware (2002) for the most in a single season.
Sophomore quarterback Brandon Silvers put a nice stamp on his impressive second half as he completed 22-of-28 attempts for 320 yards and four touchdowns. Over the final six games of the year, Silvers threw 16 touchdown passes and averaged 269.5 yards per game through the air.
Silvers tied Corey Robinson for eighth on the single-season passing touchdown list with 20 on the year, while he moved into seventh on the career list with 31.
Troy finished the game with 448 yards of total offense and outgained the Cajuns by 138 yards in the game. Ruben finished with 207 all-purpose yards, while Burks was close behind with 153 all-purpose yards.
Burks gave the Trojans (4-8, 3-5 Sun Belt) an early lead as he hauled in a 23-yard pass from Silvers on Troy's opening possession of the game. Heading into Troy's final drive of the game, Burks needed 24 yards to reach the 1,000-yard plateau. With Troy facing a fourth-and-18 and Burks needing nine yards, he rushed for 14 yards on the final carry of his career to finish with 1,005 yards.
Ruben extended Troy's lead out to 24-0 with touchdown grabs of 15 and 62 yards around a Jed Solomon 39-yard field goal – all before the end of the first quarter. Ruben finished his final season with the Trojans with nine touchdown receptions, which ties him for the eighth most in a season in Troy history.
The Cajuns (4-8, 3-5) rallied back to within seven, 24-17, early in the third quarter on a pair of Elijah McGuire touchdowns and a Carlos Alvarez field goal.
However, Troy answered ULL's touchdown to open the third quarter with one of its own on a 67-yard pass from Silvers to Jarvis Bentley. It was the second-longest pass of Silvers' career and the longest reception of Bentley's career.
From there the Trojan defense took over as Rashad Dillard sacked Jordan Davis and forced a fumble, which Garrett Peek recovered. Solomon cashed in a 21-yard field goal to push Troy's lead out to 34-17.
On the third play of the ensuing drive, Davis couldn't handle the snap and Demetrius Cain scooped up the loose ball and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown. Cain became the first player in Troy's FBS history to return a pair of fumbles for a touchdown in a season, while the Trojans finished the season with five defensive touchdowns – the most by a Troy team since 2004.
Troy forced UL Lafayette into four turnovers in the game and held the Cajuns to just 310 yards of total offense. The Trojans finished the season by forcing 16 turnovers in the final six games after forcing just three in the first six games.
In addition to being the final games for Troy's seniors, associate head coach Shayne Wasden announced before the game that he would be retiring following the contest following a 24-year coaching year, with the final 12 coming at Troy.
