TROY, Alabama – In the midst of leading one of the top defensive turnarounds in the country, Troy defensive coordinator Vic Koenning has been nominated for the Broyles Award, which is presented annually to the top assistant coach in the country.
In his first season leading the Trojan defense, Koenning has orchestrated a unit that ranks third nationally in yards per play allowed compared to a year ago. Troy opponents are averaging just 5.27 yards per play this season after tallying 6.38 yards per play last year, an improvement of 1.11 yards.
Additionally, Troy has the second-best improvement when it comes to third-down defense. Opponents are converting third downs at a rate of 33.55 percent this season after converting 50.6 percent of its chances last year. Overall, Troy's defense has allowed 67.4 fewer yards this season, a mark that ranks 13th in the country, while improving from 110th to 59th in total defense nationally.
Koenning's defense has been opportunistic with four touchdowns on the year, all coming in the last four games. The Trojans have returned three fumbles for a touchdown, the most in Troy's FBS era, and returned an interception for a score. It's the most defensive scores by a Troy team since 2007 and the Trojans' two defensive touchdowns against ULM hadn't happened since 2004.
The five finalists will be announced on Monday, November 30. The 2015 Broyles Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, December 8 at 11:30 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel in Little Rock, Ark. The Broyles Award is presented by The Rotary Club of Little Rock and Delta Dental.
