Troy Drops Tight Match with Mississippi State

TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team seamed in control late in the third set, but Mississippi State came back and escaped Trojan Arena with a 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21) win on Monday night.

After losing the first set, Troy (13-16) dominated the second set, hitting .424 with 17 kills and just three errors. The Trojans then had a 21-18 lead in the third set, looking for a 2-1 lead. From there, Mississippi State (14-10) scored seven of nine points to take a 25-23 win.

The Bulldogs then held Troy to a match-low .077 attack percentage in the fourth set, thanks in large part to 4.0 blocks, on their way to a 25-21 clinching win.

"I thought we played really well at points," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "We had leads in game one and game three late, but for whatever reason, we didn't capitalize on the opportunities to win those games."

Blair Winston led Troy with 13 kills while Leah Causey had 10. Darby Griff had a team-high .400 attack percentage with seven kills and one error on 15 attempts.

Defensively, Ali Dowdall recorded 20 digs and Karissa Carney posted a career-high 17digs. Winston and Symone Shaw led the Trojans with four blocks each.

Evie Grace Singleton had 20 kills and hit .325 to lead Mississippi State. She was also one of three Bulldogs with double-digit digs.

Next up for the Trojans is Sunday's home contest against Little Rock. Troy will honor four seniors prior to what is the Trojans' final home match of the season. Troy has just two matches remaining before the Sun Belt Championships begin on Nov. 20.
