TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's basketball returns to the hardwood on Thursday as it hosts in-state foe UAB at Trojan Arena. The game between the Trojans and Blazers is slated to tip at 7 p.m. The first 1,000 students through the door will receive white rally towels.
The game can be heard on the Troy Sports Radio Network with Barry McKnight and Jerry Miller. Live stats will also be available through TroyStats.com. Live video and audio will be available on TroyTrojans.com/watch. Fans can follow @TroyMensHoops on Twitter for live, in-game updates.
Troy (2-0) is coming off back-to-back wins to open the season for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Led by freshman Jordon Varnado, the Trojans are looking for their first 3-0 start in the program's Division I history.
Varnado, the Sun Belt Student-Athlete of the Week, leads Troy and the Sun Belt in points and rebounds per game with 23.5 and 11.5, respectively.
Last time out, the Trojans soared past Reinhardt with ease as they defeated the Eagles, 97-82, the most points scored under head coach Phil Cunningham. Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team sophomore Wesley Person led the Trojans as he shot 10-of-13 from the floor for a game-high 28 points. Varnado shot 11-of-16 from the floor on his way to 26 points.
Varnado has secured double-doubles in both games this season, just one of three freshmen in the NCAA to complete the feat.
UAB (1-1) comes to Troy following a 72-70 win at home against Alabama State. The Blazers' two games this year have been decided by just three points total as they lost their first game, 75-74 on the road at Auburn. Sophomore Chris Cokley, who has totaled 41 points and 23 rebounds coming off the bench, leads UAB. Cokley was named the Conference USA Player of the Week after his double-double performance at Auburn.
UAB returns all five starters from the 2014-15 season. The Blazers made a trip to the NCAA Tournament last year, in which they defeated Iowa State a three-seed, before falling to UCLA in the third round.
The Blazers hold a 7-0 advantage in the series over the Trojans, with the last meeting coming in 2013-14. UAB is visiting Trojan Arena for the first time.
